Artist Biography

Painting sunflowers for the Sunflower Music Festival brings together a life long interest and enjoyment of music and visual art for Naomi Cashman, a native Kansan having grown up on a farm an hour north of Topeka. She has lived in Topeka since 1968, where she and her husband raised their daughters, both of whom participated in high school orchestras and the Topeka Youth Symphony.

Naomi took up watercolor painting late in life after first having enjoyed nearly 20 years sculpting birds from wood, giving them finely textured details and painting them with oils for a natural life-like appearance. Her sculptures won regional and national awards. and The Dyche Natural History Museum at the University of Kansas had an exhibit of her work in 1996.

She began looking for a new artistic outlet several years ago, wanting to try something new and took up watercolor. Naomi says, “Painting with watercolor is a very fluid art form and was an abrupt contrast to the highly detailed work of my sculptures. It was fascinating to watch the colors flow and meld on wet paper. My excitement grew as I began exploring the possibilities of painting surrounding landscapes. I began to look closely at light and shadows, moods and colors, and how they affect one another. I photograph and paint subjects I love; landscapes, florals and subjects that inspire me as I travel. I am self-taught but have participated in workshops by Kansas and nationally known watercolor artists.”

Naomi has exhibited her watercolor paintings in galleries in Topeka and the surrounding area since 2008. She has also participated in several Plein Aire exhibits, including “Kansas 150” and “Paint Topeka” at Southwind Gallery and the Washburn University Sesquicentennial Plein Aire event. Her work has juried into “Visions of the Flint Hills” in Kansas City, the Kansas Watercolor Society National Exhibition at the Wichita Art Center, and “Paint the Parks” at the Coutts Museum in El Dorado, Kansas.
